Food for Life in Oklahoma Unique program taught nutrition to those in poverty

Watering the 'Food Desert'

The Food for Life program brought nutritional education to impoverished families Started in 2009, the Oklahoma-based Food for Life program is trying to change the outlook for poor families. These families may not have access to the resources that would inform them on how to cook healthy wheels -- without hitting their checkbooks too hard.

The Food for Life program in Tulsa, Oklahoma, sought to re-educate impoverished families on how to cook
healthy, affordable meals without processed and packaged foods.

The program was founded in 2009. Program coordinator Stephen Eberle sought to end "food deserts" where
fresh food is not easily available.

Mr. Eberle saw the connection between food deserts, the lost art of cooking fresh meals and the epidemic of obesity in rural Oklahoma.
