Use bitter herbs for optimal digestion and detoxification

(NaturalNews) Most people in western society have grown up without using bitter herbs on a regular basis. Bitter herbs are not the most tasty, but they are outstanding for our health. These herbs help produce digestive enzymes and improve liver and gallbladder function as well as anything. Utilizing bitter herbs on a regular basis is a fantastic health strategy for optimal digestion and detoxification.

When the tongue recognizes the bitter flavor it sets off a set of reactions in the neuroendocrine system that is labeled the "bitter reflex." This process is mediated by the hormone within the stomach called gastrin which stimulates the flow of hydrochloric acid. This reflex then goes down and helps with liver and gallbladder secretions of bile and pancreatic enzyme secretions (1).

Experts believe that the bitter reflex helps to improve the structure and function of all the digestive organs. Bitter is good for the liver" is a popular slogan describing the benefits of these herbs. They are also good for cleansing the blood, digestive system, kidneys and urinary tracts.

Bitter herbs are divided into two major categories: cholagogues, which increase the flow of bile, and hepatoprotectants which repair and protect the liver from overexposure to toxins. The cholagogues include dandelion root, parsley, burdock root, artichoke, ginger and goldenseal. While hepatoprotectants include turmeric and milk thistle.

Be sure to include some of these bitters in your meals and in your juicing schedule.

Dandelion:

This is rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids. They are also very high in highly absorbable methylating agents such as vitamin B2, B6 and folate. Rich in minerals such as potassium, iron and zinc, it releases excess fluid out of the body detoxifying the kidney and liver. Dandelions support digestion, reduce swelling and inflammation, and treat jaundice, edema, gout, eczema and acne (2).

Parsley:

Parsley is super rich in chlorophyll and also contains about three times the amount of vitamin C by volume as an orange. Vitamin C is extremely important for healthy immune function and youthful skin & joints. Additionally, it contains carotenoid anti-oxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which enhance eye function and help the body neutralize damage from UV radiation (3).

Coriander/cilantro:

This is a powerful heavy metal detoxifier. This is due to its strong array of phytonutrients and chlorophyll. This is extremely good for blood, liver and kidney purification. Be sure to utilize cilantro in your juices to help pull out heavy metals like aluminum, mercury and nickel (4).

Ginger:

Ginger is classified as a carminative (reducing intestinal gas) and an intestinal spasmolytic (soothes intestinal tract) while inducing gut motility. Ginger is known to reduce fever related nausea, motion sickness, and feelings of "morning sickness." Additionally, it helps aid in the production of bile, making it particularly helpful in digesting fats (5, 6).

Turmeric:

The orange Asian herb turmeric has been traditionally used for centuries by Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. Curcumin is the most powerful active anti-inflammatory compound within turmeric. Curcumin has been shown to detoxify the liver, boost glutathione levels and be a powerful suppressor of chronic inflammatory mediated disease processes (7).

Milk thistle:

Milk thistle was used by medical herbalists in the late nineteenth century to treat varicose veins and liver, spleen and kidney disorders. Today, it is primarily used to improve the function of the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal system. Many individuals have seen dramatic improvement using milk thistle for health issues such as psoriasis, menstrual problems, jaundice and poor circulation (8).

Green tea extract weight loss secrets explained

(NaturalNews) Every year, dozens of less-than-reputable companies seek out new ways to capitalize on Americans' desire to lose weight, and the stakes can be huge: In the U.S. alone, consumers spend about $35 million on weight loss programs and products each year, making it a market ripe for scams.

From "miracle pills" that claim to help you drop 30 pounds in 30 days without dieting or exercise to jewelry that purports to stimulate fat loss simply by wearing it, the weight loss marketplace is full of products that make highly suspicious claims. Some of them are patently outrageous, but others have just enough "smart" marketing to make them seem plausible, making it difficult to know which products may actually be worthwhile and which are no more than placebos.

In recent years, green tea has emerged as a fat-fighting hero, helping people lose weight and keep it off. But where other products' claims are based on conjecture or hypothesis -- or just out-and-out hooey -- green tea extract weight loss claims actually have science to back them up. In fact, for well over a decade, researchers have been evaluating the link between weight loss and a chemical in green tea called epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, which actually does help promote weight loss. If you've ever picked up a bottle of supplements or read a news article about green tea, those initials are probably familiar to you. But just what is ECGC and how does it work to help promote weight loss?

ECGC explained

ECGC is a catechin, a type of antioxidant that is found predominantly in tea, but also in smaller amounts in red wine and chocolate. Most people know that antioxidants can help decrease the harmful effects of oxidative stress, a process associated with premature aging and cell breakdown. But this particular antioxidant does more.

When consumed, ECGC helps promote fat loss by increasing the rate at which the body burns fat -- its fat oxidation level. Researchers aren't completely sure how it does that, but it appears to speed up thermogenesis, a process that uses calories to generate heat. (1)

It also helps prevent the breakdown of a neurotransmitter called norepinephrine, which plays an important role in weight management. (2) Norepinephrine works by signaling the brain that you're full. When levels are low, the body feels hungry. ECGC helps keep norepinephrine from degrading too quickly, which means you'll feel fuller longer.

ECGC helps in other ways too. For instance, in one study conducted at Penn State University, researchers found that mice who were given both ECGC and a high-fat diet gained substantially less weight than mice that were fed the same diet but were not given ECGC supplements. (3)

ECGC also appears to prevent fat cells from taking in more fat. (4) That's important, because after puberty, the number of fat cells we have stays fairly stable; of course, that doesn't mean we can't gain weight. But when we do, it's because our fat cells are expanding to hold more fat. By slowing each cell's ability to increase its fat stores, weight gain can be controlled.

If you've been keeping tack, that's a four-pronged attack:

  • Increasing the rate of fat oxidation and promoting thermogenesis
  • Inhibits breakdown of norepinephrine to help control appetite
  • Spurs weight loss even without dietary changes
  • Prevents fat cells from increasing their fat capacity

What about caffeine?
Of course, because green tea contains caffeine, some have wondered if it's actually the caffeine that's causing at least some of these effects and not ECGC at all. Cue research! A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition compared the effects of ECGC and caffeine in two groups of mice, one that received green tea extract and one that received caffeine. What did they find? The mice that received the extract had significantly greater fat oxidation rates than those that received only caffeine, demonstrating that the fat-oxidative effects of green tea have nothing to do with the tea's caffeine levels. (6) So, if you don't like caffeine, you can still enjoy all the benefits that green tea has to offer simply by choosing a decaffeinated supplement.

There are lots of other studies supporting the role of green tea in a weight loss management program, but the primary thing to remember is to select a supplement from a reputable company to ensure that you're getting what you're paying for -- and to ensure that the benefits are as great as they can be.

How to save loads of money while still eating organic, non-GMO foods

(NaturalNews) Everybody who cares about their health wants to eat organic, non-GMO foods, but the challenge is being able to afford it, right? Thanks to dwindling economic opportunities and job cuts almost everywhere, discretionary income is getting harder to come by for millions.

At the same time, eating foods laden with toxic pesticides or cancer-causing GMOs costs you a lot more in the long run due to hospital bills and severe health problems. Cancer treatments, after all, aren't cheap. So what's the real solution to eating healthy without spending a fortune?

Check out these five outstanding ways to save money on organic and non-GMO food right now:

#1) Buy organic food ingredients in bulk

It sounds simple but it really works: seek out organic food ingredients in bulk instead of in small packages.

You might be surprised to know that at least half the cost of small-quantity organic foods comes from the packaging and containers. By purchasing those same foods or ingredients in bulk quantities, you'll find the cost per ounce (or cost per serving) can be drastically reduced, sometimes by as much as half.

This is especially true for organic grains like rice or quinoa, but it can also hold true on fresh produce such as carrots and apples, both of which stay well refrigerated for an extended period of time.

#2) Grow some of your own

Growing some of your own food may be easier than you think. Sprouting, for example, costs almost nothing but provides you with a high-value fresh source of greens for salads, smoothies and more.

Using nothing more than small containers in a window sill or balcony, you can also very easily grow a nice selection of culinary herbs such as cilantro and rosemary, both of which can be very costly on a per-ounce basis at the store.

Full-scale gardening might be out of your reach, but check out container gardening and small-scale hydroponics for some really interesting approaches to growing abundant food on the cheap.

#3) Shop at more affordable food retailers

Whole Foods is infamous for selling food products are shockingly high prices, but organics are available in a lot of regular grocery stores and retailers, too. Shopping there can often save you 30 - 40 percent on fresh produce compared to Whole Foods.

Even Wal-Mart is getting into the organics business and plans to put tremendous downward pressure on organic produce prices. Although the idea of shopping at Wal-Mart might be somewhat horrifying to many Natural News readers, it's something to at least consider if they offer a nice selection of organics. In a way, "voting" for organics at Wal-Mart will encourage them to carry more organics, squeezing out the conventional, genetically modified food products there.

#4) Buy local organics from CSAs or farmers' markets

Local CSA organizations (Community Supported Agriculture) make organics significantly more affordable by sharing farm production with "subscribers" who agree to purchase a box of produce each week (or so).

Farmers' markets can also provide you with organic food choices that are significantly more affordable than buying the same produce at retail. That's because farmers' markets cut out the retail mark-up, allowing farmers to sell directly to customers at reduced prices that benefit both parties.

#5) Combine your own ingredients to make mixes and snacks

It's not very difficult to make your own granola or muesli mixes by combining bulk organic ingredients purchased at affordable prices.

Mixing your own trail mixes, cereals or snacks can save you a bundle while giving you more control over what you get.

Don't forget the long-term cost savings of protecting your health!

As you ponder the economics of buying organic, non-GMO foods vs. buying cheaper conventional foods, always remember to factor in the long-term costs of cancer, Alzheimer's and other diseases caused by pesticides, herbicides and GMOs.

Buying conventional produce may seem like it saves you money in the short run, but in the long run you're going to spend far more money on hospital bills and medical procedures than it would have cost to buy organic in the first place. Buying organic is investing in your good health, and it's an investment that pays huge dividends for the rest of your life.

Because remember:

• Organic foods have higher antioxidants
• Organic foods are higher in vitamins and minerals
• Organic foods are not GMO
• Organic foods are not grown with pesticides
• Organic foods support sustainable agriculture

Thousands break quarantine in Sierra Leone in desperate search for food

(NaturalNews) Even as health authorities begin to get a handle on the Ebola outbreak in the West African nations of Liberia and Guinea, where it began several months ago, the virus is spreading uncontrollably in neighboring Sierra Leone, as conditions there worsen all the way around.

In fact, as The Associated Press reports, lack of food is causing thousands of Sierra Leoneans who have been sealed off from the general public to break Ebola quarantine. According to several aid agencies, food deliveries are not reaching them, so they have been forced to go look for something to eat.

The AP notes that large sections of the country have been sealed to prevent the deadly virus from spreading. Many have been ordered to remain in their homes. The Sierra Leone government, with assistance from the United Nations' World Food Program, has been tasked with providing food and other services to quarantined residents. However, there are many "nooks and crannies" in the stricken West African country that are being overlooked, according to Jeanne Kamara, Christian Aid's Sierra Leone representative.

More health facilities needed

The AP further noted:

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed nearly 5,000 people, and authorities have gone to extreme lengths to bring it under control, including the quarantines in Sierra Leone. Similar restrictions have also been used in Liberia and Guinea, the two other countries hardest hit by the epidemic.

That said, there is evidence that health authorities are making some progress against the outbreak. Aboubakar Sidiki Diakite, with the Guinean health ministry, said during a recent visit to Paris that the situation is improving in his nation, thanks to international aid.

However, many more treatment centers and medical teams are still necessary in order to fully turn the corner on the outbreak, according to World Health Organization officials, who spoke in Geneva last week. Currently, there are 16 treatment centers in operation, with 58 more being planned. To staff them, however, will require as many as 500 foreign healthcare workers and 4,000 local ones, the AP reported.

The president of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, said in a recent address to political leaders in the country that ordinary citizens would also have to step up and do more for themselves. He defended the tough measures taken by him to control the spread of the disease and called on all Sierra Leoneans to end any dangerous behavior that worsens the spread of the virus, like secret burials where infected corpses are washed, or when unprotected people touch those who are sick.

"We have to take the sick out and take the responsibility with firmness," he said. "We must end Ebola now."

Spread worsening across Sierra Leone

As public health officials have stated that the heavy-handed restrictions are likely necessary to bring about control over the worst Ebola outbreak on record, the Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella group for aid organizations, has also warned that they were cutting food deliveries to thousands.

"The quarantine of Kenema, the third largest town in Sierra Leone, is having a devastating impact on trade -- travel is restricted so trucks carrying food cannot freely drive around," the committee said in a statement, according to the AP. "Food is becoming scarce, which has led to prices increasing beyond the reach of ordinary people."

Kamara of Christian Aid observed that, because food and services were not reaching them, thousands who are being monitored for signs of the infection, and who should be remaining out of the public sector at their homes, are nevertheless venturing out in search of food, which is potentially contaminating many more Sierra Leoneans.

And, she added, as infections continue to multiply exponentially, that makes it even more difficult for the government to monitor, treat and provide services to the people.

Why gluten intolerance and celiac disease is on the rise

(NaturalNews) It seems that every few years we hear of another diet fad or food fad. In the last few years gluten is getting all of the attention.? How can wheat or other common grains--fixtures of the American diet--be causing such problems?
What is gluten? Gluten is the protein found in wheat (including spelt, kamut, triticale , which are varieties of wheat), rye, and barley.

Why has gluten become a problem for so many?

There are several reasons gluten has become a problem for so many Americans.?

First of all, bread or wheat forms the basis of the American diet. Toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, rolls or pasta for dinner--the majority of Americans eat wheat all day, every day.

The wheat we eat barely resembles the wheat our ancestors ate. Although it is not genetically modified (yet), it has been significantly altered by selection, through generations of hybrid alterations to increase yields and make it more disease resistant.

Our ancestors used to sprout grains before using them. We rarely take this step to make grains more digestible.

And last, but certainly not least, Candida overgrowth in the gut is epidemic due to the American diet and use of antibiotics.

What is the link between Candida and gluten intolerance?

Our gut is filled with bacteria. If properly balanced, the beneficial bacteria far exceeds the bad bacteria and yeast. The beneficial bacteria are crucial to our health. They help us digest our food. They create neurotransmitters and vitamins. It is said that 80% of our immune system is in the gut.

When we take antibiotics, we kill off beneficial bacteria along with bad bacteria. When the level of bacteria drops in our gut, Candida, the opportunist, overgrows. When we eat sugar and simple carbs that change into sugar (including alcohol), we feed the Candida its favorite food.

Candida begins as a single cell yeast but soon changes form, becoming a hyphae, stretching out long filaments that bore through tissues in the gut (and throughout all organs of the body). A healthy intestine is lined with cells that form a tightly knit defense to keep its contents contained. Nutrients are pulled from the food we eat through tiny vessels from the circulatory system and lymphatic system within the villi, little hair like projections. When Candida erodes the lining of the gut, undigested food particles and large proteins, like gluten, are leaked into the bloodstream and the lymphatic fluid. The immune system attacks these particles, perceiving them as foreign invaders. This is the root cause of many auto-immune diseases and allergies.

What are the symptoms of gluten intolerance?

Digestive disturbances such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea are the most basic symptoms of gluten intolerance experienced when gluten is consumed. Those with a severe sensitivity also experience rashes (which can be severe, itchy, weeping sores) along with mild to severe muscle and joint pain.

Gluten sensitivity includes a reaction to foods with minute amounts of gluten including foods processed in a shared facility. In other words, wheat , rye, or barley may not be an included ingredient, but if the equipment used to process a particular sauce or packaged food was used to process food with wheat, it can be contaminated and produce symptoms.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease with a genetic predisposition.? There are up to 300 symptoms of this disease, but there are also individuals who are asymptomatic.? The one thing they all have in common is the result of eating gluten--it attacks and destroys the villi in the intestine. When villi is destroyed, our capacity for absorbing nutrients from our food is diminished. Each time gluten is eaten even in small amounts, more damage ensues.

Can gluten intolerance be reversed??

If Candida is eradicated, if the gut is completely healed and is no longer permeable, and the immune system has healed, it is possible that many will again tolerate gluten. It is advisable, however, to get tested to be sure Celiac disease is not silently damaging the intestine.

In conclusion

Gluten intolerance is not a fad. It is a fact--an every growing reality caused by the American diet and lifestyle. If you have been diagnosed with any autoimmune disease or with gluten intolerance, leaky gut caused by Candida may well be the root cause. See How to Kill Candida and Balance Your Inner Ecosystem.
